Sign Language Club Purpose

The purpose of the Sign Language Club is to increase awareness and appreciation of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing community, to teach and practice sign language, and to provide opportunities for DHHS students to meet and interact with members of the Dead/Hard of Hearing community. No prior signing experience is required, and we welcome all who are willing to learn!

Sign Language Club Outing Info

The sign language club took a trip to see the film, A Quiet Place. This film has been a breakthrough for the Deaf community as the actress who plays the deaf daughter in the movie, Millicent Simmonds, is deaf in real life.  The fact that a mainstream movie director chose to cast a deaf actress to portray a deaf character is significant and historic to the Deaf Community.  Additionally, the daughter character Simmonds plays has an intelligent personality and is not the offensive, false "deaf and dumb" stereotype of past American film.

Meeting 2/12/18

We learned Valentine's Day signs as well as reviewed past signs!

Meeting 1/23/18

During this meeting we started with review of past signs rather than reteaching, which will become routine for the next meeting. (alphabet, colors, numbers, greetings, manners) We learned clothing signs as well as new year signs.  Next meeting February 12th, will be learning Valentine's day signs!

Third Meeting 12/12/17

Thank you to everyone who came to our third meeting! It was holiday themed, and we learned winter/festive signs as well as had some treats!  Remember to practice your alphabet, greetings, and emotions. See you next month!

Next Meeting 11/14/17

Remember to practice fingerspelling your name! Next meeting we will be teaching some Deaf culture of namesigns, and then introducing ourselves to each other combined with the greetings learned at the last meeting.  As always, there will be snacks! I hope to see you there. :)
