Honor the Valor Feature: Sea to Shining Sea Flag

THE SEA TO SHINING SEA FLAG makes another appearance at the 6th Annual Dana Hills High School Honor the Valor Celebration.

This flag has been on a remarkable journey.  After the 9-11 attacks, Maine retired elementary school teacher, Larry Ross, challenged his students to come up with something that made a difference.

In 2002, for the 1-year anniversary of the 9-11 attacks, Larry and his students created the Sea to Shining Sea Project honoring those who perished with a 30’ X 50’ United States flag that would be flown on the East Coast and then traverse the county to be flown on the West Coast all  in the same day.

On September 11, 2002, the flag was raised on Cadillac Mountain in Maine at sunrise.  It was then flown to and displayed in Yardley, PA, a town that lost 14 people in attacks.  The flag made its final flight that day to San Diego, where it was unfurled on the beach in front of the Hotel Del Coronado at sunset.

Known as the “Sea to Shining Sea Flag,” it has flown over Ground Zero in New York City and at Arlington National Cemetery as well as the Jima Memorial.  The flag continues to travel the country, passed on from group to group on its never ending path serving as a symbol of remembrance and unity.

We are honored to have the Sea to Shining Sea Flag as part of our 2017 Honor the Valor Celebration. Please come to the Honor the Valor Celebration on Friday, October 13, 2017 at 6:00 pm to see this flag as it is presented to our 2017 Honor the Valor Honorees.  We won’t see it again until 2018 as it will quickly leave Dana Point for its next destination.
