Honor the Valor Feature: Gold Star Family

Gold Star Family: John and Cindy Elliott

By Carisa Carlton

The 2017 Dana Hills High School Honor the Valor Celebration is grateful for the opportunity to honor local Gold Star Family John and Cynthia Elliott who suffered the unimaginable burden of losing their son, United States Marine Corps Captain Sean Elliott, in a Mississippi aircraft accident this past summer.

During his short 30 years, Sean expressed gratitude for his steadfast family values, which paved his passion for dignity, fairness, and respect for all. Sean accepted responsibility for mentoring others by providing virtuous leadership to his younger brother, Erik, and to the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity brotherhood.  Sean lovingly cherished his wife, with whom he was planning a family, and he was grateful for her loyalty.

Sean took into account that the pursuit of liberty involves great risk: After completing his civil engineering undergraduate degree at University of California, Davis, Sean earned his wings at the Marine Corps flight school before courageously deploying to the Mediterranean, the Persian Gulf, North and Central Africa, Norway, Japan, South Korea, and Afghanistan to fight with an American warrior spirit for our freedoms.

Sean was gentle with the earth. He advocated dignity for animals. And, he bravely believed he could find solutions to challenges of the human condition. Sean would have enjoyed today’s Honor the Valor event as he valued brotherhood, outdoor sporting events, artistic expression, and multicultural celebrations.

Being a Gold Star Family is a distinction that no parent wants, but in the face of their sorrow, John and Cindy’s courage to share Sean’s patriotic legacy inspires our desire to maintain a graceful commitment to their support as members of our community.
