AP World History | Maryann Fenstermaker

Hi.  I'm Mary Anne Fenstermaker and I've been teaching at DHHS for 17 years.  I have a B.A. in Psychology from CSULB and an Ed.M. from Harvard University, the Graduate School of Education.  My tenure at Dana Hills High School has included 13 years of teaching AP European History.  I developed AP World History as a course for freshmen at Dana beginning in the fall of 2012, filling a gap of no Social Studies offerings for freshmen.  AP World History is now in its fourth year, and 75% of the students who take the course pass the AP test in World History, well above the national average.  DHHS is one of the few high schools in CUSD to offer this opportunity to freshmen, allowing them to earn 3 units of college credit, saving both time and money.

Students will learn human history dating from the prehistoric to current time in all regions of the world.  In comparison, Honors World History, also offered to freshmen, covers the historical period 1600 to the present with a largely western focus.  AP World History prepares the student for further work in the AP program focusing not just on historical content, but analytical thinking, reading, and writing skills.  AP World History is the most rigorous Social Science course open to freshmen, but it is also very colorful, fun, and interesting.

I will be presenting a brief explanation of the course as well as providing examples of the average reading level required, the text, and supplementary resources in the class. I will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
